The Energy Assessment Process

We use a proven series of steps to analyze, detect, and diagnose the problems with your residential energy system and home energy efficiency.

The first step is a thorough visual inspection of the home, looking particularly at the “building envelope,” which is the outer shell of your house that separates the conditioned and non-conditioned areas of your house.

Next, we’ll check your insulation, using infrared thermography to map out spots where the insulation may be missing, improperly installed, or is otherwise not performing at peak efficiency.

We’ll then do an air leakage test using a blower door, or Thermal camera, or both together, which will help measure the cumulative effect of your home’s air leakage issues.

Next, we’ll check your home’s ventilation systems to ensure they conform to effective standards.

We’ll also check your gas lines, appliances, and your water heater to make sure there are no gas leaks.

The auditor will also evaluate whether your HVAC system is causing pressure differences in your house or is out of balance. When your HVAC system leaks, the system can force air out or pull air into the home along with other pollutants.

Blower Door Testing

The blower door test is an essential first step in the detective work of finding the problems in your house’s energy system and gaps in energy efficiency. A blower door is a large, calibrated fan that is temporarily mounted in a home’s outer door to measure the “leakiness” of the house and to help find those leaks.

The blower door test is essential in the detective work of finding the problems in your house’s energy system.

Many homeowners might assume that inefficient windows come from inefficient windows. No matter how efficient your house is, glass will always be around 20 degrees colder than a wall. A good window covering like shutters or curtains is a better solution than replacing your windows.

You might also think your heater or air conditioning system is the culprit. In many cases, your HVAC system is simply struggling to keep up with a house with many undetected leaks and inefficiencies. Sealing those leaks will help your HVAC system work more efficiently.

When using a blower door in conjunction with a thermal camera and our other tools, we can clearly see where your home’s energy efficiency needs improvement.

Combustion Safety Testing

Suppose you have gas or fuel-oil-powered water heaters, furnaces, boilers, or even fireplaces. In that case, you need an expert to help you assess whether these appliances’ dangerous gases vent properly. At Pure Insulation, we will thoroughly inspect your vented combustion appliances to ensure that no dangerous gasses are leaking into your home.

Carbon Monoxide is a particularly deadly gas, because it is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, and so unless you have a carbon monoxide alarm in your house, you might not even know you’re breathing it in until it’s too late. Inspecting your gas appliances will give you the peace of mind to know that you’re safe from deadly gases. We’re specifically looking for signs that conditions in your house might create “back drafting,” where combustion exhaust rolls out of the intended exhaust pathway and leaks back into the house.

Thermal Imaging

The experts at Pure Insulation use a thermal camera to inspect your home and detect where it might be vulnerable to leaks or inefficiencies. The thermal camera looks at your home’s insulation, hot & cold spots to determine a few key things:

  1. whether there’s enough insulation present
  2. whether it was properly installed
  3. whether and where the insulation has settled over time.
  4. where the envelope actually leaks direct air causing drafts.

Thermal imaging is also a great tool to detect air leaks in your home – the kinds of air leaks that also leak money out of your wallet. By using a thermal camera, we can find all of those leaks to get a full picture of how to improve your house’s comfort and efficiency.

Energy Audit Suggestions and Improvements Make Homes More Comfortable

A full energy audit can help you clearly understand where your house’s energy system needs improvement. By sealing cracks and leaks, fixing problems with insulation, resolving problems with your house’s ventilation system, and ensuring your gas appliances are operating safely, , you will improve your house’s efficiency and comfort, and indoor air quality.

You won’t have to go get that blanket because of a sudden draft in your den – instead, your den will be cooled or heated to the temperature you choose, and it will stay that temperature as long as you want it to. An energy audit is a great way to get you from the drafty, inefficient house you have today to a cozy, comfortable space that really feels like home.

Suppose you’re living in a home with an inefficient energy system rife with cracks and leaks and insulation problems. In that case, you are paying more money for heating and air conditioning and putting unnecessary strain on your HVAC system.

An inefficient system needs to be run more frequently, thus lowering the system’s overall lifespan and increasing maintenance costs. Trust our experts at Pure Insulation to help you get a clear picture of your house’s energy system, and where it can be made more efficient, so you can enjoy your appliances – and your home – for longer, and with less wear.
